Temple University stands as a pillar of higher education in Philadelphia, and the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust is proud to partner with them through our Smith Scholars program. Since 1978, when we first awarded our scholarship grant to Temple, we’ve witnessed its growth into a respected institution dedicated to academic excellence. To date, our contributions total $7,118,640, reflecting our commitment to nurturing the talents of Temple’s students.
For the 2023-2024 academic year, our $216,000 grant benefited 26 outstanding students, representing a diverse range of majors including Film and Media Arts, Secondary Education, Psychology, Social Work, Advertising, Communication Studies, Biology, Speech Language Hearing Science, Physics, Horticulture, Political Science, Neuroscience, Communication and Social Influence, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, History, English, and Health Professions. Meeting these scholars at Morgan Hall in Fall 2023 was a true pleasure, as we observed their enthusiasm for learning and their dedication to their respective fields.
Temple University, founded in 1884 by Russell Conwell, offers a comprehensive and affordable education to its roughly 33,000 students. With a curriculum spanning over 600 programs and a distinguished faculty, Temple empowers students to explore their academic interests and find their path to success. Our Smith Scholars at Temple receive not only financial support but also invaluable resources such as small group advising, peer mentoring, and assistance in applying for additional scholarships and fellowships. We are delighted to see the Smith Scholars progress in their respective paths, whether they’re pursuing prestigious awards like the Goldwater Scholarship or engaging in groundbreaking research through programs like the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates.
We at the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust believe Temple University offers a valuable educational experience, and we’re thrilled to contribute to the success of its deserving students.
I came to Temple with the goal of being the first in my family to earn a bachelor’s degree. But after receiving the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust Scholarship as a sophomore, I have the new goal of being the first in my family to earn a graduate degree. I hope to attend a PhD program in Genetics and Genomics. The Smith scholarship has given me the freedom to thoroughly explore research topics and engage in course work without worrying about tuition costs or living expenses.
