Murphy’s Giving Market

Eradicating food insecurity around Upper Darby

Murphy’s Giving Market is a volunteer-driven organization committed to eradicating food insecurity in the diverse community of Upper Darby and neighboring areas. Established in April 2020 by Executive Director Desireé LaMarr-Murphy, Murphy’s originated as a backyard “market” providing essential food items to neighbors impacted by job loss during the pandemic. Today, the organization operates a thriving food pantry on West Chester Pike, serving over 200 families weekly and supplying a variety of fresh produce, halal meat, fish, grains, dairy, and more.

Initially founded to address immediate needs, Murphy’s has evolved into a vital community hub, offering not only food assistance but also acting as a fiscal sponsor for the Federation of Neighborhood Centers and partnering with the Community Action Agency of Delaware County (CAADC) to provide social services. Additionally, Murphy’s collaborates with the Movement of Immigrant Leaders in Pennsylvania (MILPA) and serves as a referral center for residents seeking essential services.

In response to the pressing issue of food insecurity in the 19082 zip code, particularly among seniors and students, Murphy’s launched the Culturally-Responsive Food Pantry project, generously supported by the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust. This initiative focuses on providing culturally appropriate food, supporting low-income student athletes through the Athl-EATS program, and ensuring food availability during school breaks and major holidays.

Recent Achievements:

  • In 2023, Murphy’s served 7,995 individuals from 1,603 households in Delaware County, distributing over 350,000 pounds of food.
  • As of February 2024, the organization is now assisting over 300 households each week.
  • Murphy’s, powered by a dedicated team of volunteers, runs the pantry efficiently to meet the growing demands of the community.
  • The pantry proudly serves a diverse clientele, accommodating languages such as English, Spanish, Bengali, French, Vietnamese, and many more.
  • Rap’s Athl-EATS, a program honoring the late Rap Curry, supports student athletes in the William Penn School District, providing nourishing snacks for after-school activities.

W. W. Smith Charitable Trust is inspired by Desireé and team at Murphy’s Giving Market and their tireless efforts to address food insecurity and encourage a strong, resilient community in Upper Darby.

It genuinely feels good to do what is right. To see the faces of those being served, to feel their hearts’ delights, and to know that we are making a difference and impacting lives in a meaningful way. The support of W. W. Smith helps us to provide culturally relevant food and continue our mission to allow community members to shop with a choice and a voice, with possibilities that work for them.
